Another wonderful day trip is an excursion to the busy tourist town of Killarney. In Kerry, nature speaks with two voices - the wild, dramatic, awe-inspring coastline and the serene, soothing lakes of Killarney. The highlight is a visit to the Killarney national park, which is nestled among ancient woodlands and misty mountains, which invite peaceful walks and quiet reflection.
Step into a world of lush forests, sparkling lakes, and majestic mountains. Ireland’s first national park in Killarney is home to the famous Muckross Lake, Torc Waterfall, and the Gap of Dunloe. Walk, cycle, or take a jaunting car ride through this breathtaking landscape where red deer roam freely and every turn reveals a new postcard-perfect view.
🏰 Ross Castle is one of Killarney's top attractions, perched on the edge of Lough Leane, is a 15th-century fortress steeped in legend. Wander its ancient halls, imagine life in medieval Ireland, and soak in the serene lake views that surround it. It’s a place where history whispers through stone walls and reflections dance on the water.
Killarney has lots of designated walking trails. My favourite is the walk up to Torc Waterfall. The 20 metre waterfall is located within the Killarney national park. The sound of rushing water, the scent of moss and pine, and the cool mist in the air create an atmospheric and peaceful immersion into nature.
This 19th-century Victorian mansion offers a glimpse into Ireland’s aristocratic past. Wander through beautifully preserved rooms, stroll the manicured gardens, and explore the traditional farms nearby. The atmospheric ruins of Muckross Abbey are a wonderful photo stop. It’s a peaceful and educational stop that’s perfect for all ages and one of Killarney's star attractions.
Nestled between the MacGillycuddy Reeks (Ireland's highest mountain) and Purple Mountain in Killarney National Park, the Gap of Dunloe is a dramatic glacial valley carved over 25,000 years ago. It is best explored by foot, bike or traditional pony trap (jaunting car). Starting from Kate Kearney's cottage, visitors can choose from the 2km walk or longer 10km trek.
Killarney offers a number of boat trips. From Dundag Pier, near Muckross House, you can embark on a tranquil boat tour across Muckross Lake to the charming Dinis Cottage. This historic tea house sits at the enchanting Meeting of the Waters, where three lakes—Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, and Upper Lake—converge.
